Tutorials Chair Responsibilities
A tutorial is different from a panel in that it involves instruction rather than
discussion. The tutorial presenter is an "expert" in the field, and the attendees
are usually novices.
A tutorial is different from a workshop in that it is delivered in
lecture-style, and may not involve active learning (hands-on
activities). Further, tutorials are usually 75 minutes long and are
usually held during the conference.
- Determine the requirements for tutorial proposals.
(February of previous year)
- Post a web page with the details. This page will be linked
from the conference page by Web Publicity Chair
- List tutorial topics
of greatest interest to the audience, and solicit proposals on those topics.
- Investigates the possibility of SIGCSE/NSF funding for
importing SIGCSE tutorials.
- Collect tutorial proposal submissions
- submitted by hard copy
- submitted electronically - In this case, set up an electronic submission
procedure (Summer of previous year)
- Send acknowledgement of each submission to proposer. Acknowledgement should include:
- Date of notification of acceptance - after the (January Meeting)
- Deadline for submission of camera ready copy of proposal description
- Reminder that all tutorial presenters will be expected to register.
- Evaluate proposals, either personally or by requesting others to read
them and determine proposals that are acceptable (to be done by
January Meeting).
- Work with Papers chairs, and Panels Chairs to put together a
conference program before the January Meeting.
Hand this program to Publicity Chair and CCSCNE Editor
by the end of the meeting.
In addition, prepare a list of accepted tutorials with the following
details for each tutorial:
title, name, affiliation, address, telephone, fax and email of all the
tutorial presenters. Forward
this list to CCSCNE Editor in order to assist in compiling the
proceedings.
- Notify tutorial proposers in writing of acceptance or rejection.
(within a week of January Meeting.)
Acceptance letter should include:
- Format and deadline for submission of camera ready copy, and address
of CCSCNE Editor to whom it should be mailed.
- Copyright release form, that must be signed by all tutorial presenters
- Registration form and registration fee must be sent by all tutorial presenters
- A/V request.
- Send a list of the tutorials with the following details for each tutorial:
title, presenters with affiliations and email addresses,
and an abstract - to the Publicity Chair (Web) to post on the Web.

and tutorial presenters about unusual Audio-Visual requests.
- For hands-on tutorials, ensure host site has appropriate hardware
(before approving the proposal).
Obtain software license from the proposer and pass it on to
Local Arrangements Chair for installation
(one month prior to conference date.)
- Work with Local Arrangements Chair to make available lab assistants
during the tutorial (if necessary).
- Serve as liaison between CCSCNE Editor and tutorial presenters about missing
registration forms/fees and camera copies.
